Posted by sdrury on December 1, 2009

Well, who else would it be? That’s Dylan in the gray wig, simultaneously mocking and celebrating Christmas songs.

Brave Combo version of the song(From Tx, appeared on the Simpsons once, also David Byrne’s great flick True Stories). Dylan kinda reminds me of Petty in the Don’t come around here no more video.
When asked why he played these songs in a straightforward style. He responded “There wasn’t any other way to paly it. These songs are a part of my life, just like folk songs. You have to play them straight too.”
When told that some critics thought that this album was an ironic treatment of christmas songs, Bob responded:”Critics like that they are on the outside looking in. They are definitley not fans or the audience I play to. They would have no gut level understanding of me and my work, what I can and can’t do-the scope of it all. Even at this point in time they don’t know what to make of me.”

It’s pretty obvious that Dylan views these songs as part of the American songbook–Irving Berlin, Woody Guthrie, Delta Blues. Christmas songs are part and parcel of the same experience, Dylan’s straight reading of them is a send-up of the many who spoof them.
